When building a dream home, homeowners have a long list of key elements they desire in the houses they build. We’ve been seeing trends in new single-family detached home construction that are consistent, whether it’s a starter home or a custom, estate home.
New Home Construction Trends include:
Open floor plans. The number one request from our homeowners is an open floor plan, one which connects the kitchen to the family room for both entertaining and everyday living. Open floor plans mean no more disconnect from the rest of the family during meal preparations and parties that aren’t squished into the kitchen.
Functional mudrooms. Homeowners are demanding highly functional and organized ‘drop areas’ to collect mail, keys, backpacks, shoes, coats and other items that were once dropped on the kitchen counter or dinner table.
Laundry centers. Doing laundry is a necessary evil, but today’s homeowner wants a conveniently located laundry room with storage, drying areas, sinks and folding space.
Home office. At least one home office is in all our homes and we’re finding that many families are modifying plans to incorporate two home offices as more and more people are working from home all or at least part of the time.
In-law suites. Used for either aging parents or au pairs, a complete living space with kitchen and bath along with a separate entrance from the main house is an in-demand element in new home construction.
The beauty of building a home is that you can incorporate your desired spaces, rooms, function, details and finishes to make it uniquely yours. When we work with a homeowner, we typically begin with a floor plan which includes all or most of these features. We assess the needs of the family and help them make changes, if necessary, to make it work for them.
